Debut Novel by Rocky Matson Brings the High Plains of 1889 to Life

The Ordinary Grit: Courage Under an Unforgiving Sky Now Available

Pierre, South Dakota – Rocky Matson announces the release of his debut historical novel, The Ordinary Grit: Courage Under an Unforgiving Sky, a character-driven story set on the high plains of South Dakota in 1889. Against the backdrop of a relentless drought and mounting pressure from a circling railroad land agent, the novel explores what happens when an ordinary community is asked to endure the extraordinary.

When the well on Elias Thorne’s North Field runs dry, the future of his family and farm teeters on the edge. In the nearby town of Oak Haven, four lives—Elias, a stubborn farmer; a taciturn blacksmith; a Boston-bred schoolteacher; and a wide-eyed young apprentice—are drawn together as they each face a common question: what do you hold on to when every ledger and every cloudless sky tells you it’s time to quit?

Told through these four unflinching voices, The Ordinary Grit centers on the kind of courage that does not announce itself. It is the quiet resolve that shows up before dawn, stays past dark, and keeps working when no one is watching—an everyday bravery that built families, farms, and towns across the American plains.

Matson’s inspiration for the novel is deeply rooted in his own family history. He grew up hearing stories of a Norwegian great-grandmother who crossed an ocean alone at sixteen, a great-aunt who taught in a sod schoolhouse in Nebraska, and generations of farmers who turned the plains of Nebraska and Colorado into something worth passing down. Those voices—of hardship, hope, and stubborn endurance—inform every page of The Ordinary Grit.

“History is often told through grand events and famous names,” Matson says. “I wanted to tell a story about the people who rarely make the headlines—the ones who got up every day, did the work in front of them, and quietly moved the world forward one field, one family, one small-town decision at a time.”

The Ordinary Grit: Courage Under an Unforgiving Sky is available now in paperback and ebook formats. Readers who enjoy immersive historical fiction, multi-perspective storytelling, and stories about faith, family, and endurance will find much to love in Oak Haven’s windswept streets and fields.
