His debut novel, The Ordinary Grit: Courage Under an Unforgiving Sky, is set in South Dakota in 1889 and explores what happens when drought, pressure, and uncertainty force a community to decide what they are made of.

Raised on stories of the people who came before him, Rocky drew inspiration from a Norwegian great-grandmother who crossed an ocean alone at sixteen, a great-aunt who taught in a sod schoolhouse in Nebraska, and generations of farmers who built lives across Nebraska and Colorado. Those family histories shaped his love for resilient characters, stark landscapes, and the quiet strength that often goes unnoticed.
